MedAire Launches New Maritime Burn Kit for First Responders
Portable Medical Kit for Placement Throughout Ships at Sea

LONDON – Oct. 6, 2009 – All kinds of burns occur at sea—sun burns, coffee burns, engine burns—which is why MedAire’s (www.MedAire.com) medical team has developed a Burn Kit to be used exclusively for burns received by crew and guests while on board a yacht or ship. A supplement to existing onboard medical kits, the portable burn kit makes for easy identification of burn-specific medical supplies in a single location.

MedAire’s Burn Kit is designed for placement throughout the vessel in locations commonly known for burns such as the galley, engine room, tender and garage. Weighing only three pounds, first responders can grab it and go to the scene to help alleviate unnecessary pain and suffering in victims.

MedAire’s MedLink Global Response Center recently triaged a maritime crewmember for a fuel oil burn to the upper right thigh that occurred while performing maintenance. The MedLink doctor, who recommended the appropriate burn treatment and ongoing monitoring, is credited for the grab-and-go single-source concept.

“The chances of crew and guests encountering a burn—thermal, chemical or electrical—are great,” explains MedAire Vice President of Aviation and Maritime Health Paulo Alves, MD, MSc of the decision to develop the kit. “The initial approach to a burn will have a positive impact on the outcome of this rather frequent event.”

Burn Kit supplies include, but are not limited to:

  • Pain and anti-itch creams
  • Trauma scissors
  • Cold compresses
  • Bandages and dressings of various sizes
  • Burn sheet

The kit also features important First Aid instructions developed by MedAire’s medical team.

The MedAire Burn Kit retails for USD $99. For more information, contact MedAire at +1 480 333 3700 (Americas), +44 1252 517 951 (Europe) or +65 63309534 (Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa).
